REVIEWS ON 'OLIVER TWIST' - READER

This term, 3rd B/C bilingual students read Oliver Twist . These are some of their reviews on the novel:

A review by Nuria A.

I’ve recently read a book that made me learn about the society in the 19th century. It is Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickenss.

It tells the story of Oliver, a young and innocent boy that is treated very badly by some people along the book. We can see all the people that beat him, and on the opposite side all the people that take care of him, that was the society in that age. However, he tries to find his place in the world.

This book is not the best I have ever read but I liked it. I think it is very good because you really feel sorry for Oliver. The story is very well elaborated and the characters are really well done and you can get to know all about them. But if I had to say something negative about the book, it is that there are a lot of characters and sometimes it is difficult to remember who is each one.

I highly recomend this book if you like the history of England or historic facts. It is maybe a hard book, but I think it is necessary to know that now we are very lucky, but previously children like Oliver weren’t that lucky. There is also a film on the book. I haven’t watched it, though I would like to.

A review by MARÍA R.

Published in 1837, Charles Dickens´ “Oliver Twist” continues to be a literature classic that represents the incredibly massive social differences of 19th-century London realistically, as its genre is commonly associated with Victorian social realism.

The novel takes place in Victorian London, both the rich part and the most disadvantaged part. The plot revolves around Oliver Twist, a poor orphan that goes through a lot of misery until he learns the truth about his identity and, how, surprisingly, he ends up having an extremely happy ending.

In my opinion, this novel will be the perfect fit for you if you are into history, as it shows clearly the social context of that time and, as I did, you can find interesting seeing how everything has changed.
